Oliveto Residence

location: Chania, Crete
status: design study completed
study: β26 architects

This architectural study concerns the construction of a two level residence near Vlacheronitissa, a small village in Chania, Crete. The plot to be studied is a slightly sloping olive grove, 4 acres big. The ground floor area of the house is 190.00 sq.m. big while the basement area is 95.00 sq.m.

The main idea was the design of two stone, and perpendicular to each other, walls that oraganise the house and, at the same time, act as a filter between the public and the private space. The first wall is the one that separates the parking lot and the adjacent property from the residence’s space. The second wall separates the yard and the living areas (living room, dining room and kitchen) from the bedrooms of the house. In this way, a smooth and gradual transition from the external environment to the microworld of the house is achieved. Two volumes that "penetrate" one of the two walls organise the spaces of the residence.
As far as the internal organization of the house concerns, the designed spaces are influenced by the traditional architecture that is perfectly combined with the contemporary design trends. The materials used are fully harmonized with the natural environment and the stone walls. Cement floors, off-white plaster on the walls and wood on the movable and fixed furniture decorate the house’s interior.

Outside, there is a 55.00 sq.m. big swimming pool, while the least possible changes are made. The boundaries between built and natural environment are completely distinct, creating a direct contact between the user and the nature. The floors of the outdoor area stand next to the soil and the natural flora of the plot. Finally, the olive trees that are preserved contribute to the configuration of the house’s microclimate.

nail studio

location: Athens, Greece
status: design study completed
study: β26 architects

This architectural study concerns the interior design of a nail studio in the center of Athens, covering an area of 45.00 sq.m. Our team’s main idea was to organise the studio’s functions and, at the same time, maintain the visual continuity of the space.

The main functions include pedicure and manicure services, while the secondary ones are a hair removal and massage area, a WC and a small kitchen. So, in order to serve our primary goal, we designed a light metal construction that acts as a divider between the space of the pedicure and that of the manicure. The same construction organises the circulation inside the studio and offers extra storage space at its base. Finally, it can also be used as a seating area since the size of the store was not enough to design a waiting room.

On the other hand, the separation of the secondary functions is achieved by using different levels. The height of the store was sufficient to create an additional level that would accommodate the hair removal and massage area, the WC and the kitchen.

With the use of these tools one can have an overall view of the space and services offered, whether located inside or outside the store.

Residences in Apokoronas

location: Chania, Crete
status: under construction
study: β26 architects

This architectural study concerns the construction of three vacation houses at Sellia, Crete. The plot to be used is inclined, 1560,00 sq.m. big and has a great sea view. Our team was asked to design two identical houses 108.00 sq.m. big, and a smaller one, 80.00 sq.m. big.

The three houses follow the sloping ground, in order to ensure that all of them enjoy an unobstructed view towards the sea. The entrance to each house is achieved through a courtyard that is located at a lower level than that of the street. This countryard functions as a filter between public and private space, enhancing the privacy of each residence. In all three cases we see two stone walls that protect and embrace the houses, turning them towards the main outdoor space.

The two identical houses are L shaped so that all the residences’ rooms have access to the main outdoor area and the view. At the first part of the L, the living areas (kitchen, dining room, living room) are placed, while at the other part we find the bedrooms. An interior hallway, parallel to the private courtyard, connects the living areas with the bedrooms and the bathrooms. The smallest house consists of two parallel sliding volumes. The living areas are placed at the front volume, while at the second one we can find the bedrooms and the bathroom. This third house is also adjacent to a threshing floor that existed on the plot and is now preserved. At the outdoor area of each house a23.00 sq.m. big swimming pool is placed while in all three cases we find a passable roof.

As far as the interior design concerns, natural materials are used. Stone walls, wooden furniture, wicker objects and airy fabrics compose the ultimate summer setting.
